It was fully expected that "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" would break some box office records, but one has to wonder if anyone even remotely expected this
After achieving a new midnight showing record with over $43 million, the film debuted on Friday, July 15, 2011 with an opening day total with $92.1 million in the US.
That number shatters the previous record of $72.7 million which was held by "The Twilight Saga: New Moon".
The ERC box office reports that the opening for the film includes the $43.5 million from midnight shows and actually is estimated to completely win the record of best opening weekend ever. The "Dark Knight" held the old record but "Deathly Hallows 2" looks to be on track for $175 million in its opening weekend which would best Christopher Nolan's film by almost $17 million. Would the Harry Potter break the Avatar's record? Time will show...
