David Dobkin, a director not known for action epics, is prepared to direct a King Arthur film from a script he wrote, and Warner Bros Pictures is ready to back the project
Dobkin's credits include Shanghai Knights, Wedding Crashers and Fred Claus, and he has The Change-Up (another body-switching comedy, this time with Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman as the switchers) heading to theaters in August. Given his film credits, this new take on King Arthur could involve more comedy than previous versions of the classic story. Or, Dobkin could be totally changing things up and ready to make a straight-up action adventure film.
The Hollywood Reporter says the bidding was fierce for Dobkin's King Arthur story, but WB ultimately beat out 20th Century Fox and Universal.
The last time the King Arthur legend was brought to life on the big screen was in Disney's 2004 King Arthur starring Clive Owen as Arthur, Ioan Gruffudd as Lancelot, and Keira Knightley as Guinevere. That action drama, directed by Antoine Fugua, costs the studio $90 million and grossed $195 million worldwide before exiting theaters.
