The actress was offered to play a British writer, archaeologist and Barnett Gertrude Bell in the film «Queen of the desert», directed by Werner Herzog
Werner Herzog has been planning to make Queen of the Desert with Naomi Watts for a couple of years. Naomi Watts has departed writer/director Werner Herzog’s Queen of the Desert, but is looking to be been replaced by someone of equal stature in Nicole Kidman. The actress would score the plum role of Gertrude Bell, the iconic British explorer, writer and archaeologist who is credited with helping to form the map of The Middle East at the dawn of the 20th century. The production has already experienced a casting switch with James Franco stepping in to replace Jude Law as Bell’s lover, Henry Cadogan. Robert Pattinson remains the only original cast member with the actor set to play archaeologist-turned-British army officer, Col. T.E. Lawrence, who became close friends with Bell. Queen of the Desert will mark Herzog’s first narrative feature since 2009’s. No word on when production will start but the film has a slated 2015 release.
